David’s family had been farming the same land for decades and his ancestors had developed and owned the land. In the case of a man named David, the family farm was passed down to someone who no longer wanted to live in the country and work the land. These farms were where children and grandchildren grew up and thrived, and the food was grown to feed the family. The family homestead has typically always been a part of a family’s life and heritage, and in many American communities, that homestead centered on the family farm. Sometimes they even move to other countries. ![]() However, these days, people are spread out more widely and it’s not unusual for children to live across the country from their parents and grandparents. Regardless of where we move, that home base is familiar to us and what we consider home. People lived in smaller communities and tended to stay close to home. Often, the family property like a farm would stay in the family for generations, being passed down from one generation to the next. Back in the old days, it was common for families to stay near each other even after the children grew up and move away. ![]()
